This was a great post, thanks for sharing it. I have been researching a lot lately about SEO regarding education resources and what have you. I understand that it can be as broad or as specific as you would like. I am really trying to develop a plan on what to study and would appreciate your advice. As of now, I am teaching myself by means of free education resources on these topics; SEM, SEO, marketing in general, html coding, and website design. I plan on offering services relative to those topics as a sole freelancer and wasn’t sure if there is anything to delve deeply into that would better my understanding. If you could suggest any other topics you think would be of great help, or any education resources, whether they are free or come at a price, it would be greatly appreciated.
But what do you think? Are you wanting to start your own business, but haven’t had the confidence yet to take the plunge? Have you just started your own online business, perhaps an SEO company? Let us know by leaving your comments and opinions below!

Quite a few people have asked me how to raise capital to start a new business. My response is always, “what for?” They usually have a blank look on their face when I ask that. The reason they often look perplexed is that most people just think you need to raise capital to start a business. We refer to those people as “wantrepreneurs”, not entrepreneurs. Don’t fall for this excuse.
I think the most important lesson I’ve learned is that you have to have a scalable process in place if you want scalable and predictable results. Such an eye-opening lesson, after learning that from the NYT best selling book, The E-Myth Revisited.
Consumers are overwhelmed with the number of options they have available to them, whether it’s places to eat, places to shop for underwear, or places to fill up on gas. So search engines make life extremely easy for them by allowing them to enter a few keywords, and return a host of options ranked and filed based on a number of factors that make it easier for consumers to choose and be satisfied at the end of the transactions. If the recommendations or results prove satisfactory, consumers will return to the search engine and use it again, allowing them to monetize through advertising.
We all want to become our own bosses right from the start, but truth is that you need to work somewhere for at least one year. And not necessarily because you gather knowledge, but because you gain an insight view into a business. You see how things work, you get to go to various conferences on this topic, know people from the field and so on. All this is going to be really useful when you will start your own company.
If you have happy clients who are getting leads from the traffic generated from your services, they will be more than happy to recommend you to the many business people in the area who they will network with regularly. There is no hotter lead than an introduced, recommended lead because the hard part of convincing them that you can be trusted has already been done!
Great Article on the basics of SEO but there is so much more to it. THe Keyword Research if the most vital part before doing all of the basics you have to be spot on or your search engine optimization campaign will be a disaster. understanding what phrases cause a action you are desiring on your site and what has the most traffic are two different things and there needs to me a clear understanding of this before you start.
He said doing both would teach me invaluable lessons on doing hands-on SEO and also help give back to the online community. He was right on all counts, and I am forever indebted to him for his sage advice.
Neil, thanks a lot, as always, for sharing your story. It’s very inspiring and touches on a few things relevant to any kind of business: drive results, care about clients, think big and don’t be afraid to do some free work at the beginning. Loved it!
Seriously, I’ve never thought of starting an SEO firm. I actually have a clue of how difficult SEO is to do effectively. Good SEOs are hard enough to find, and WordStream seems to be a nice place to meet some of them.
In this guide I will be teaching you how to start an SEO business. I currently own a local SEO company myself and have been running it since 2009 with good success. By the end of this guide you will have all the tools and know how to go ahead and start your very own local SEO business, all you will need to do is read this tutorial and take action.
We operate in a relatively “old-school” market sector in terms of understanding of SEM and asking partners for links seems more hassle than it’s worth. Seriously!! You’d think we were asking for their bank details, not a backlink.
Breakfast clubs seem to be popular places where people can chat and enquire about each other’s business and how they may be able to help each other out etc. These are ample opportunities for you to secure one on one meetings in future when you can be armed with a full report on their site and have keywords researched for them to target.
In any case, photography technique is something we know a lot about and this would probably be the most through knowledge we could give back. Similarly, leads (small businesses that sell products) who can’t afford to hire us may try to photograph their products themselves & at this point we could connect with them until they are large enough to outsource their photography.
This means you need to determine who in your company (maybe everybody?) will become active on Google+ and other key social graph and authority platforms like LinkedIn to champion your brand, create content, and get connected to other authoritative people. Google+ posts pass Page Rank, and Google+ profiles may show author attribution on results pages, so it’s an especially important platform for SEO.
Reading your blogs seems to be living with you and seeing your personal growth as an entrepreneur as you always mention how you learned all these things. I am mentioning the kind of revelation you made about 51 leads and 18 leads.
Another important aspect of keyword research is targeting a service area. Following a format of [target keyword describing product/service] + [location] is a good rule of thumb for writing your homepage’s title tag and body copy (more on these below). For example, “Kyle’s Taqueria – Taco’s and More | Boston, MA”
“SEO is a cumulative process. If you start now, by the time your competitors catch on they’ll already be months or years behind you. And they’ll have to spend thousands to catch up. On the other hand, if you wait…it could be you playing a desperate game of catch-up” – This statement, for me, sums up why the potential client NEEDS to be buying the SEO services you are offering. It instils the urgency to get moving on it quick, plants the seed of fear about their competitors getting the jump on them and the possibility of it costing them even more money in future to try and get on an even keel with their competitors again.
I am not in SEO business in any way, but subscribe by every word you wrote there. My consulting business (nothing of your magnitude or level, but still) was growing and doing well – but then started to slip and went down substantially. If I am to list reasons why, all of them are contained in this post of yours – because I was not doing what you are listing. Well, you learn as you go. This year I am set to turn things around.
This article legitimately falls into the category of webspam because it uses a subject and a page name to target an important keyword then presents an article about the woes of being self-employed. And forgive me, but the several subjects broken in this article are not “news.” The material is common sense.
It’s fine to want to do something and have the drive to do it but if it’s going to potentially create a financial hardship quickly then it is really the wrong decision. There are a few really good options for someone who is on the fence for financial reasons.
I think it would work as it builds trust. If you find that it is hurting you, you can then start blocking some of it off and creating paywalls. But overall giving away the farm really helps build trust and loyalty. I’ve found that it causes more people willing to open up their wallets.
Fully populate each and every relevant section so that your listing is complete. If you’re a service business and don’t have a location customers or clients can visit, don’t worry; you can choose to hide your physical address as you’re setting up your Google My Business listing.

It’s true that SEO isn’t as easy as it once was. You used to be able to follow a script: incorporate this title tag, put this keyword on your page, repeat it a few times, get links with the keyword in the link text, get even more links with keywords in the link text, and when you’ve finished doing that – get a lot more links with keywords in the link text.
As trite and simple as it sounds, communication is the one thing that should be a constant. After an interaction with a very unhappy client, we made it a policy to have a weekly phone call with the business owner. This keeps things from getting out of hand and it also helps build and maintain the relationship.
